Organizing children’s toys is often very difficult. Sometimes it seems impossible and we start to look at expensive options — like buying a new house with more rooms! — or think that a built-in-robe is the answer to our woes or some fancy underbed storage unit that costs a fortune. The stack of toys becomes a financial liability instead of a source of learning and fun. Here are some tips for organizing children’s toys to give you more space, help them find what they need and enjoy lots of fun play without having to buy a new bigger house! 1. Cut Back on the toys children have available. We tend to give children too many toys cluttering up their space and inadvertently hampering their enjoyment of the toys that they do have. Resolve not to buy or borrow any new toys until the next birthday or Christmas (this is very good for finances!) and see if there aren’t any toys that you can give away or sell. Ask the child to help you donate items to charity and for those that you agree are suitable to go send them on. 2. Store some toys in adult space. For those toys that you resolve to keep store about half in your “adult space” — like the garage, shed or top of the wardrobe — where the child can’t see them or get to them. Shifting some toys into alternative storage space — is usually a very cheap option for organizing toys. You reduce clutter instantly and can then bring them down when you are ready to rotate the toys that the child has available. 3. Raid your recycling. The cardboard box makes a very good storage unit for everything from lego to dolls, skipping ropes to bicycle helmets, while plastic containers with lids are excellent for pens and pencils, jigsaw puzzles and anything with small parts that you want to keep together. Regularly raid your recycling to get useful storage options for sorting toys instead of having to put everything in one box or drawer. 4. DIY cube shelving. These days cube shelving is very popular and also very practical for storing children’s belongings. They can learn each item has a place in an easy to see “cube” arranged in a bookshelf. However, real cube shelving tends to be expensive and the idea is so new that you don’t have many second hand units available. One DIY option — if you aren’t a very handy person — is to just modify a regular second hand bookshelf and insert some straight pieces of wood as dividers; or you can even tape together your own cardboard box version of the product which will work fine so long as you don’t plan to store anything very heavy in the boxes that are not on the bottom row. This option is often very useful since you can create just the space you want from nothing more than cardboard boxes! Organizing children’s toys most certainly does not mean you have to buy a new house or build a play room to house their things! You can organize them by sorting out what they don’t need anymore and giving it away, storing some toys away from them in an alternative space, use recycling products to hold toys and/or creating a purpose designed shelving unit to hold those items that they do need available at the moment.
